Distracted

Sometimes I wonder if we’re all just living from one distraction to the next until we die.

It’s so much easier to spend my time on something that entertains or distracts me from real life. And I’m disappointed in myself and the people around me for not just falling for, but embracing one of the oldest tricks in the book.

The enemy doesn’t have to defeat us when he can simply distract us.

Oh, look, a squirrel!

And off we go chasing down a rainbow, moving from one distraction to the next and never even knowing what we’re missing out on.

It’s easier to watch a show together instead of talk to each other and actually work on our marriage. It’s easier to browse Etsy and Amazon instead of writing. It’s easier to detach watching funny Youtube videos than pray. It’s easier to buy things instead of dealing with what I already have. It’s easier to try to make more money than spend less.

There will always be something that is easier or more exciting. There will always be the lure that you deserve a break, you’re too tired to connect, or you just need to finish the season.

This is not the post I intended to write, but it’s the one I needed to hear.

Sometimes the thing I’m being distracted from is true rest. In this season of my life there are days I NEED to take a nap so that I can love my family well.

And some days housework is the distraction, when what I really need to do is cuddle the 3 year old who isn’t feeling well and watch a favorite movie together.

It’s not the thing itself that is the issue, it’s what it’s distracting me from.
