You Don’t Have To Do Everything

“I can’t do everything!” Samuel flopped down on the bed dramatically.
I was folding laundry on the bed and Samuel was supposed to be helping, but instead, was getting distracted, snuggling with the warm clothes. (It is a rare occurrence when the laundry gets folded while it is still warm, which is probably why it was so enticing.)
I had asked him to find the sock matches and he had also volunteered to fold his and his brother’s underwear. He was wallowing in the clothes when my reminder to him of his assigned task prompted this dramatic scene.
“You don’t have to do everything, you only need to do what I’ve asked you to do. I didn’t give you too hard of a job,”
I had replied, and immediately felt a twinge in my heart.
How often it is that I am overwhelmed with motherhood because: I have procrastinated on the tasks that are less than enticing, I have taken on other (unnecessary) responsibilities that add to my workload, or I have been distracted by other (mostly trivial) things, when I only need to do what He’s asked me to do.
He has not given me too hard of a job.
